PA2009_098.jpg (1) Card, Rugby (1991). Regina. Collection of Puke Ariki (PA2009.098).

One of Taranaki’s favourite rugby sons is captured in action on this collectable rugby card. Produced in 1991 as part of a comprehensive set of cards, it features Kieran Crowley, who racked up 200 games in amber and black from 1980-1994, becoming the province’s leading points scorer in the process. His brief player profile on the back of the card shows his he had a big season in 1990.

“Back on the national scene again, Crowley's value to Taranaki was enormous. In tests for the All Blacks during 1990 he wasn't called on to kick goals, but he showed against North Auckland in the last provincial game of 1990 that Grant Fox isn't the only deadeye kicker in our rugby. Crowley set a new national record of eight penalty goals in the match.” After he retired from provincial rugby in 1994, Crowley’s involvement with the side continued as coach from 1998-2007.
