This memorial to George Patterson is located on Frankley Road, New Plymouth, adjacent to the road that is named in his honour. Patterson was killed on 28 February 1864 while out searching for missing stock. An inquest into the death was held on 29 February 1864 at the hospital on Gill Street.

George Patterson is buried with his first wife Elizabeth and his second wife Susannah at the Taranaki Cathedral of St Mary. 

In his book In Thy Toil Rejoice: The Story of J.J. Patterson (1990) Arnold Pickmere noted that the memorial was erected in 1947.
