The John Avery office and warehouse in Lower Currie Street were built in 1919-20. The building was one of architect Thomas H. Bates' early New Plymouth designs. The contractors for the two-storey reinforced concrete building were R.L. Roberts & Son.
The building was ready for occupation by April 1920 and was described in some detail (as well as the Avery business) by the Taranaki Herald on 3 April 1920.
It was demolished in 1986 to enable Centre City to be built.
Similar design features could be seen on McEwan's Building (also built in 1918) in King Street.
