A66_354.jpg "Mutu's Whare, Mimi" (1895). Nellie Hastie. Collection of Puke Ariki (A66.354).

This unusual diamond-shaped painting of ‘Mutu’s Whare, Mimi’ was gifted “To Dear Mrs Kyngdon, with warmest love from Nellie B. Hastie” on 6 May 1865, according to the inscription noted in flowing handwriting on the back.

It is stored with another painting of the same shape depicting New Plymouth’s breakwater and the Sugar Loaves. This second painting bears a very similar inscription to the first, gifting the painting “To dear cousin Mary, with warmest love from Alice” and dated the same day.

It is possible these two rather naive paintings were created by friends at school or in an art class and were gifted with much affection to important figures in their lives.
