PA2009_035.jpg Cap (1984). Head Talk Inc. Collection of Puke Ariki (PA2009.035).

Is this a cap that spawned a regional catchphrase? Trucker style caps like this one began to be given away to new car clients at Phillipps Motors Ltd (now Energy City Ford) during 1984 after the new Dealer Principal, Peter Lloyd took over.

Robin Astridge, who worked at Phillipps Motors at the time, remembered Peter asking whether New Plymouth had a slogan they could put on the caps. Robin replied that he did not know of one but "we are a city of oil and gas... so we are an energy city".

"ENERGY CITY" was subsequently emblazoned on the caps. Robin thinks this may have been the first time the phrase was formally used in connection with New Plymouth. Of course others may have different recollections of how and when the phrase appeared.
