Hungarian refugee Lajos "Loui" Kuthy (1924-2004) was born in a land-locked country but went on to become a successful fisherman after arriving in Taranaki in 1957, eventually owning Fresha Fisheries. He was awarded the Hungarian Order of Merit in 2000.

A memorial plaque honouring Loui's achievements, made by his son Peter and featuring a propellor from one of his fishing boats, was unveiled at Port Taranaki on 12 August 2007.
