The present New Plymouth Courthouse in Robe Street was opened 3 April 1967. The first Supreme Court session began on 15 May 1967.

Foundations for the building were laid in 1964, tenders called in March 1965 and construction began in September 1965. The Architectural Division of the Ministry of Works was responsible for the design.

Additions and alterations were carried out in the late 1990s, this time it was organised by Works Consultancy Services Ltd.
