A well-known New Plymouth firm retailing interior decorating supplies, Darby & Hannan. Their store was originally on Brougham Street, in Skinner's Buildings beside the Taranaki Hotel (later the Royal).

A building permit for this building was issued to Darby & Hannnan Ltd. on 17 April 1928. The builders were Jones & Sandford with an estimated cost of £7,300.

The building was completed and occupied by the end of year, receiving praise from the Taranaki Daily News on 1 December 1928.
