This building on the corner of Currie and Powderham Streets was built for Taranaki Newspapers Limited (TNL). The two daily newspapers (Taranaki Herald and Daily News) had just merged under the umbrella of TNL, and new premises were needed for the Daily News.
The old Sargood, Sons & Ewan warehouse on the corner was demolished in August 1964 and work began on the new building.
The architects were the New Plymouth firm Bowering, Thompson & Associates and the contractors were Riddick Bros. & Still. The cost of the building was reported as £162,000.
The Daily News moved into the building in March 1966 and a supplement published on 1 April 1966 described the building and the new features in some detail.
In the mid-1980s the neighbouring Currie Street buildings were demolished, and this building was enlarged to include staff from the Taranaki Herald.
