Bank of New Zealand (1873 - 1965)

This building on the corner of Robe and Devon Street West was erected for the Bank of New Zealand in 1873. Thomas King, manager of the bank in New Plymouth, had earlier purchased the section from Frederic Carrington.

The building was designed by the bank's architect, Mr E. Mahoney. The contractors were the Auckland firm, Aitcheson and Price, with the successful tender being £2,350. Construction was supervised locally by the architect William Knott.

As well as the public offices, the building also included a residence for the manager, which included six bedrooms and living quarters. The Bank of New Zealand took possession of the building in September 1873. 

In 1885 the Bank of New Zealand moved to new premises on the corner of Brougham and Devon Street West. The building was then sold to the Bank of Australasia.

It was demolished in 1965 to make way for the new premises of MacEwans Machinery Ltd.
