Pioneer or Ōtaka Park is in Hakirau St at the western end of the Fonterra Coolstores on Breakwater Road. In 1998 the Pioneer Monument was moved a few metres to allow extension of Port Taranaki facilities. In March 1999 the monument was re-dedicated and seven additional plaques covering the history of the Ngāmotu/Moturoa area were installed.

1. The Plymouth Company

2. Otaka and Mataipu

3. Moturoa Oilfield

4. Port Taranaki

5. Traders and Whalers

6. The Ngamotu Mission

7. Australind Mast

Paramount chief of Ngāti Te Whiti, Poharama, who died in 1878, lies in the urupa alongside this park.
