Erica Place in Bell Block is named after a flowering plant. From the intersection with Smeaton Road, it forms a gentle decline directly towards the Mangati Stream. It wasn’t always intended to be this way.
A subdivision plan for the general area was first drawn in the 1960s and Erica Place was one of the names selected for a street. Development work took a long time to get underway however and later, when a new landowner desired a more efficient use of the land in the area, those plans were changed. In the 1970s a whole new street layout was designed.
Unlike some of the street names in the area that had been included in the earlier plan, then were removed in the newer plan, Erica Place retained its original name.
After services were connected, Erica Place was formed and house building finally commenced in the mid-1970s. At the time, demand was strong and each section was quickly sold and built upon. Over twenty years later, two more houses were added on the street.
