The memorial was to be unveiled at the opening of the Drill Hall on 18 June 1892, but it was uncompleted at the time, and it was to be "fully two months before it is finished."
The memorial was transferred from the Drill Hall in Kawau Street to St Mary's in November 1916.
"A memorial to the Taranaki Volunteers who fell in the Maori War, which was originally placed in the Old Drill Hall, has recently been removed and re-erected outside the west end of our church..."
Report of St Mary's Annual Meeting, Taranaki Daily News 27 April 1917.
