Two options were discussed by the Waverley School Committee as regards a memorial to honour the local men who paid the ultimate sacrifice in World War I. A belfry with the names of the men on a plaque was one suggestion, however it was decided in May 1919 that a drinking fountain at the school was the most appropriate choice. A War Memorial Committee was chosen, and fundraising commenced. The memorial was unveiled on 20 October 1920 by Miss Southcombe, the daughter of the chairman of the Waverley School Committee.

Each side had a water supply, overflow 'cup' and a semi-circular step on the base to allow children to reach the supply. The water and cups have been removed and the hole filled with similar marble.
