This large Cross of Sacrifice, erected by the Waitara RSA, is located in the serviceman's area of the Waitara Cemetery. Work began on the memorial in 1956 when the base was erected and the Taranaki Herald reported that it was hoped to continue the work on the base of the obelisk the following week. Coloured slabs of stone had been acquired from Auckland for use in the memorial.

All the work was done using voluntary labour, which, along with poor weather in the winter of 1957, may account for the reason that the memorial was not completed until May 1958. It was designed by Waitara High School art master, Max Smart. It was officially unveiled by the Ven. G.H. Gavin, Archdeacon of Taranaki, on 13 July 1958.
