Uruti War Memorial (1949)

These memorial gates are located outside All Saints Church on Uruti Road. In 1939 the community began fundraising for a centennial gateway, however with intervention of another World War, it was not until 1949 that the gate was erected. It was dedicated on 29 May 1949 as a war memorial, incorporating tablets with rolls of honour. It was unveiled by Mrs C.S. Larsen and Archdeacon G.H. Gavin led the ceremony.

One of the above servicemen - C. Kirton is most likely to be Chudleigh Inwood Kirton who was killed in the Bere Ferrers rail accident, 24 Sept 1917, when 10 Kiwi soldiers were killed by an oncoming express after alighting on the wrong side of their carriage. He is also recorded on the NPBHS gates, Uruti and Fitzroy memorials.
