A meeting was held in Inglewood on 22 September 1947 to discuss five different options for a World War II memorial. The five options, all eventually voted down, included: a gymnasium, swimming baths, a clock tower, three houses for returned servicemen and playing fields. In October 1947 the Taranaki Daily News reported that a decision had been made to proceed with a War Memorial Park on the Moa Street Reserve and a flagstaff to be located near the World War I memorial.

On 9 November 1948 the Inglewood Borough Council was presented with plans for the flagstaff drawn by Mr V. Birt. While it generally met with council approval, some amendments were sent back to the war memorial committee to consider.

The flagpole on the corner of Matai and Rata Streets was officially unveiled on 19 December 1948. The granite stone at the base of the mast includes a plaque which reads:

Erected

To the memory

Of those who

gave their lives in

World War II

1939 - 1945
