The Hawera & Normanby Star reported in March 1922 that the Alton War Memorial was finished and that great credit was due to the contractor, Mr Jones of Hāwera. The memorial, located at Alton School on Hursthouse Road, was unveiled 25 April 1922 by Edwin Dixon, the MP for Pātea and Mayor of Hāwera.

In 2013 it was decided to move the memorial from the now-closed school grounds to a section next to the Alton Coronation Hall. The move was celebrated by over 500 people at an 11am ANZAC Day service on 25 April 2014.
