The Queen Street Takeaways building was probably constructed by influential early Waitara settler Joseph Pennington during late-1879 and was almost certainly in existence by mid-1880. It is likely Waitara’s oldest surviving commercial building on its original site, and probably the oldest building in the town centre.
Joseph Pennington leased this property from owner Charles Waller, who had earlier purchased the section from the Crown in 1873.
The building has been occupied by a variety of tenants over the last 140 years, with early occupants including storekeeper auctioneer and agent Joseph Pennington, architect Edward (Ed) Wickham, and drycleaner Ellis Lee Adamson.
As of 2024 the cottage is occupied by Queen Street Takeaways - not many takeaway shops can say they operate from a 130+ year old building!
