This large home in Courtenay Street was constructed for Mrs Isabelle Brewster in 1925. It was designed by noted New Plymouth architect Thomas Herbert Bates, who advertised for tenders for its construction in late September and early October 1925. (Taranaki Daily News, 5 October 1925, page 1)

A permit was granted by the Borough Council to Mrs Brewster on 18 November 1925 for the construction of a residence on Town Section 2069, Courtenay Street - Boon Bros were the builders, and the estimated construction cost was £2000.

Thomas & Alice Waddell bought the house in the mid-1930s after the death of Isabelle Brewster. Thomas lived in the house up until his death in 1985, Alice having died earlier in 1974.
