This building in Currie Street was erected in 1929 for the "oil, colour and wallpaper merchants" Messrs. R & E Tingey and Co. Trading as Tingey's Ltd. this was the local branch of the Wellington-based company established about 1870. 

It was designed by noted New Plymouth architect Thomas H. Bates and the contractor was Mr F. E. Cooper. Tenders were called for in August 1929 and the building was officially opened on 26 May 1930.

The frontage was completely renovated and modernized in 1961 to plans by New Plymouth architect R. W. Syme.
