A collection of stories about T.H. Bates Buildings. This content was originally created for the Kete New Plymouth website, Taranaki's online digital archive of stories, images, video and audio relating to life in Taranaki.

The three individuals who have most affected the present cityscape of New Plymouth are the surveyor, Frederic Alonso Carrington and architects, Frank Messenger and Thomas Bates. Carrington was responsible for the city’s location and the present street pattern of the central area. Bates’ buildings, also substantially located within this area, remain, even today, major high-profile structures in the city.

Further buildings designed by Bates can be found by searching his name on the homepage. These are buildings in other story collections such as Stratford Buildings, Inglewood Buildings and, when published, the Taranaki Dairy Factories collection.
