Ralph Taylor was born in Dunedin on 15 April 1910, the son of John Edward Taylor and Lila Myrtle George. He married Waitara woman, Rita Ramari Fenton, in Waitara on 11 June 1935.
Before World War Two he and Rita had three children and he worked as a labourer in Waitara. When he was called up for service in 1942 he was working as a sharemilker in Tikorangi.
After the war he returned to Taranaki where he continued working on farms or labouring. For a time he and Rita ran the West Beach Kiosk in Waitara. He died on 15 June 1987 in Waitara.
