Richard George Scott was born in Matiere on 18 March 1916, the son of Lillie (nee Williams) and Albert Scott. Before the war he worked as a carpenter in New Plymouth.

During World War Two he served with the 7th Field Company, New Zealand Engineers. He also served with Jayforce in Japan with the New Zealand Engineers.

He married Dorothy Elizabeth Candy (1921-2002). Richard died in New Plymouth on 19 December 1981.
