Arthur, Laurie, Frederick and Roy Lehndorf were the sons of William and Minnie Lehndorf of Waitara and four of six siblings. Three of the brothers served overseas during World War Two.
Arthur Cyril and Laurie Ernest Lehndorf were twins born 14 December 1917. Arthur worked in Waitara as a butcher before enlisting with the 36 Infantry Battalion, D Company and also in N Force. He died in Waitara in 1995.
Laurie worked as a storeman before the war and then served as a Gunner with the New Zealand Artillery. He died in 1979.
Frederick Martin Lehndorf was born 27 April 1920 lived in Wellington where he worked as a postman. During the war he signed up as a signalman with the 2nd New Zealand Divisional Signals but did not end up serving overseas.
Roy Melvin Lehndorf was born 26 February 1922 and also worked as a butcher in Waitara before the war and married Margaret Mary Rae. He enlisted as a Private with the 25th Infantry Battalion. He was killed in active service on 24 September 1944 in Italy. He is buried at the Cesena War Cemetery, Italy. He and Margaret had one son who was born after Roy was deployed overseas. Margaret later married Roy's older brother, Arthur.
