Richard Leopold Hooper (known as Leo) was born in Stratford, September 1920 and was the son of Albert and Margaret Hooper. Before the war he married Eliza Agnes Hooper (Betty) and worked as a farmhand in Waitara.

During World War Two he was a Private in the 30th Battalion and spent most his war service at Guadalcanal in the Pacific. When he returned home from the war he received a “rehab” farm on Davis Road, Waiongana. Later, he farmed at Kaimata. He died in New Plymouth on 26 January 1993.
