Ronald Hector Hartley was born on 7 May 1919 in Hurleyville, South Taranaki, son of Joseph and Pauline Hartley. He lived in Gill Street, New Plymouth and worked as a storeman before he enlisted as a Private with the 22nd Infantry Battalion and served in World War Two.
His first wife was Winifred Saywell. Winifred died in 1962. He later married Alice Mary O'Carroll.
He served as a Warrant Officer Class 1 in the Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment, Hawke's Bay Regiment for just short of 30 years. He retired in 1969.
He was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal (MSM) and the NZ Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal.
Ronald died in the Hawkes Bay on 11 August 2009, aged 90.
