Max Vincent Gower was born on 6 April 1921 in Forth, Tasmania but came to Eltham as an infant with his family. He was the son of Leslie and Lilian Gower and one of seven siblings. Max was educated at Eltham School and then worked as a hairdresser in New Plymouth. 

He served with the 27th Machine Gun Battalion in the Second World War. Max was killed in action in Italy on 23 July 1944 and buried in the Florence war cemetery.
