Hilary Thomas Victor Gower was born on 21 April 1913 in Devonport, Tasmania and then shifted to Eltham with his family when he was a young boy. He was the son of Leslie and Lilian (nee McGlone) Gower and one of seven siblings.
He married Gwendoline Margaret Glentworth in 1934 when he was 21 years old. He was working as a truckdriver in Hawera when he called up for service in March 1942.
He died in New Plymouth on 3 August 1987.
