Faull, Maxwell

Maxwell Faull was the son of Lewis and Blanche Faull of Tikorangi and was born on July 15 1915. He attended New Plymouth Boys High School but left at the age of 15 due to an illness. He worked on the family farm before becoming a partner with his brother Wilfred in Faull’s General Store, Tikorangi.

He enlisted in the Army at the outbreak of World War Two, received his training in Auckland and at the Trentham Camp and was sent to the Middle East with the Third Echelon. Once in Egypt he was posted to B Company 21 Battalion.

He died on November 22 1941 during an engagement with the enemy near the Bir Ghirba Frontier during heavy fighting. It was reported that while keeping behind cover he raised his rifle slightly to remove dirt from the barrel, but a sniper saw the movement and his solitary shot hit the rifle stock, the bullet angling off to kill Faull instantly. He is buried in the Halfaya Sollum War Cemetery, Egypt.
