Evan Bertram Davies was born in New Plymouth, 18 Feb 1921. He spent five years at New Plymouth Boy's High School before working for two years as a cadet reporter on the Taranaki Daily News.

He began his training with the RNZAF in 1942 and was posted to England in 1943. Before he left New Zealand he learned that his brother, Flight Sergeant Ian Wynn Davies, had been lost over Germany during a bombing mission. Ian was later confirmed as having been killed in action.

Evan was later transferred to the Middle East where he flew as a pilot and captain of many Wellington bomber aircraft flights over Europe. He was killed in action during a raid over Austria on 20 August 1944. His body was recovered from the wreckage and he was buried at Klagenfurt War Cemetery, Austria.
