William Allen Rex (known as Rex) Cossey was born in Kaponga on 6 September 1923, the son of Charles and Muriel (nee Dakers) Cossey. He was one of 14 siblings.
Rex worked as a motor lorry driver in Eltham, before serving in World War Two with the NZ Airforce in the Works Division at Guadalcanal and Los Negros Islands.
In March 1946 he married Valerie May Ward of Auckland. The couple had four children, Neville, Graeme, Janice and Diane.
Rex was involved with road cycling before and after World War Two. He built bikes as a hobby while working as a motor mechanic and fitter and welder. He built several hundred bike frames over the years, early on using the brand name Supreme, and later, Cossey.
Rex died on 1 January 2005 in New Plymouth.
