Serviceman Ronald John Corkill was the son of John James Corkill and Emma Corkill (nee Godtschalk), of New Plymouth. On the New Zealand birth registry his official full name is John Henry Charles Ronald Corkill.
He studied at Victoria University and graduated with an MA in Education in 1940. Before the war he worked at Wellesley College and the Correspondence School.
Ronald was tragically killed in action on 23 September 1944, aged 28 years. He is buried at the Ravenna War Cemetery, Italy.
