Serviceman Michael (Mick) Joseph Brennan was born in Opunake on 2 December 1915, the eldest son of Arthur Joseph Brennan Snr, first Mayor of Opunake, and Hannah Elizabeth Brennan (nee Finnerty). He was working as a clerk in Hāwera before World War Two and served as a Captain with the Tonga Defence Force during the conflict.

Mick married Cecelia Anne Brophy (1914-1990) in 1945 and they had two children, Desmond and Carolyn. He died in Auckland on 8 April 1980 aged 64 and was laid to rest at Mangere Lawn Cemetery.
