Ian Charles Fitzroy Allan was born in Bell Block on 22 September 1914, the son of Herbert Thomas Allan and Nellie Marina Allan (nee Bendall).
The youngest of five brothers, Ian moved with his family to Upper Frankley to a farm when he was young. He attended Frankly School and New Plymouth Boy’s High School. Before the war he was farming on Kirihau Rd, Koru.
He was called up for overseas training in December 1941 and served with the 34th (Mixed) Battalion as a Corporal.
In 1944 he married Laura May Jones (1921-2007), who had come to Taranaki from Auckland to work as a housekeeper for his parents, after his mother suffered a stroke. In 1946 he bought a farm on Frankley Road. Laura and Ian had four children. Allan died in New Plymouth on 7 August 1999.
