Agitation for a tunnel on Kiwi Road resulted in a petition to the Minister of Public Works in 1913, and following this an undertaking was forthcoming from the Minister that funds were in place for the work to begin. (Taranaki Herald 29 August 1913)
The Taranaki Herald announced on 31 July 1914 that the "tunnel heading" had been broken through and the postmistress, Mrs E. Hutchins, was the "first lady" through the tunnel.
Completed in 1915, this short (154m) narrow tunnel is sometimes known as the Eastern Kiwi Road tunnel. Kiwi Road runs parallel to State Highway 3, from Moki Road to Okau Road.
