The Hāwera Heritage Study reports that construction of this church began in November 1905, and was completed in April 1906. It was the third church to be built on this site; the first was built in 1876.

Two towers which used to feature on the top corners of the building were removed in 1951 due to safety concerns.

The Heritage Study describes it as an: "interesting building architecturally for its mix of styles, and is in original condition". The architect was Mr. T.H.Gilman.
