St Peter's By-the-Sea is part of the Pio Pio-Aria-Mokau co-operating parish. The church is used by Anglicans, Methodists and Presbyterians.
The church was originally built when the Rev. Alan B. Pywell was the Anglican vicar. It was dedicated on 17 November 1952 and consecrated by Bishop Holland on 25 July 1953.
The church, which can seat 110, was valued at about £2,000 when built, but with gifts and voluntary labour had only cost £686.
