St Paul's was the first co-operating church built in Ōpunake. It was erected on the site of the old St Andrew's Presbyterian Church on the corner of Havelock and King Streets.

The estimated cost was $110,000 with the funds coming from a public appeal and the sale of church property.

The church opened in 1981 and is shared by the Presbyterians and Methodists. The first minister was Mr Ian Miller.
