This small Anglican church was built on Burton's Hill (Puketuru), on 2 acres of land donated by Adolphus Kyngdon. It opened on the 6 January 1860 and survived intact during the Taranaki Wars due to a tapu sign on the door of the church.

Twenty-eight years later the building was moved to the junction of Barrett and Weston (now Pheney) Roads. It was located on land owned by Charles Muller and reopened for worship on 1 July 1888. The church closed for a few years in the 1920s but was repaired and painted in 1930-31.

Due to dwindling congregation numbers, the church was moved to a site on Broadmore Street, Vogeltown in 1951. It had been hoped to use the old church as a hall, however the building was found to be in very poor condition.
