Methodist services began in Ōpunake as early as 1881. According to Kate Mickelson (The Clearing, A History of Opunake), the Methodists built the first church in Ōpunake. It's unclear as to whether the present church is this original church.

It seems likely that the Methodists ceased using this building when they united with the Presbyterians and moved to the new Co-operating Church in King Street in 1981.

The Christian Fellowship Church was established in Ōpunake about 1977. Kate Mickelson records that the Fellowship bought this building after it was vacated by the Methodist congregation.
