When this Catholic church in Clinton Street, Fitzroy opened in 1958 the design was the first of its kind in New Zealand. The unusual octagonal shaped building was designed by Mr. F.C. Roberts of Wellington and built by Hub Van Den Dungen. The estimated cost was £25,000 pounds.

The building included German windows, an organ from Holland, marble from Italy, English lino, and timber from Taranaki. (New Plymouth Photo News, July 1958, issue #18)

It was opened and dedicated in a service conducted by Archbishop McKeefry on 22 June, 1958. (Taranaki Herald 23 June 1958)
