The Nintendo Game Boy has a lot to answer for. The hand held console with the monochrome screen and the addictive Tetris puzzle game was a huge success as soon as it was launched in 1989, distracting kids from doing their homework, the dishes, or talking to their parents.

While other portable systems had more power and fancy colour displays the Game Boy came out trumps because of its long battery life and play-ability. It quickly established itself as the market leader, with hundreds of games available. According the Nintendo website the Game Boy range has since gone on to sell more than 150 million systems worldwide.

This battered transparent DMG-01 model was dropped in anonymously to Puke Ariki, but the wear and tear on the buttons suggests it has seen plenty of action. It appears to be in working order but as no games are included, this has yet to be tested. Perhaps some other kind donor may offer us a game to go with it?
