Those wanting the ‘real’ history of this fine scrimshaw work are on the horns of a dilemma. These mounted bullock horns feature various likenesses, including Ngā Ruahine leader Riwha Tītokowaru, and Parihaka leaders Tohu Kākahi and Te Whiti o Rongomai III. A portrait of Governor Lord Onslow and the date “1891 Mei (May) 4” are also visible. But who decorated these horns, and when and why they did so, remains a mystery. Perhaps the artist was referencing Onslow’s visit to Parihaka on 11 December 1890. Or perhaps they relate to the bullock drawn ploughs of the Parihaka passive resistance campaigns? Or maybe both these theories are really just a ‘load of bull’.
