Constructed in 1923 and designed by the engineering firm "Templin and Toogood".
In 2013, Tag Oil purchased a 90% stake in Opunake Hydo Ltd. which operates the small station. (Taranaki Daily News 20 February 2012)
It featured in Kelvin Day's 'Of passing interest' column in 2012 and is listed in the Opunake Heritage Inventory (2003).
