Botanical artist Janet Marshall was born in England and came to New Zealand in 1958. She settled in Taranaki and began painting birds and plants in 1970. During the 1970s and 1980s she completed paintings for Common Birds in New Zealand I and II (published 1972/1973), Uncommon Birds in New Zealand (1975) and Handbook of Common New Zealand Birds (1987).

Between 1985 and 1989 she was commissioned by New Zealand Post to produce a number of paintings of endangered New Zealand birds for postage stamps. She also painted a series of botanical postcards for the Pukeiti Rhododendron Trust.

Janet has produced a number of art prints, cards, notelets and cold-ceramic bird sculptures under the brand Marshall Prints.

Her 1992 book Images of a garden: through the seasons with Janet Marshall recorded the plants and animals in her backyard at Te Popo, near Stratford.

She now lives in Nelson and has published six children’s books on New Zealand flora and fauna.
