William Pellew's Villa, 58 Pendarves Street (1894)

William Pellew purchased Town Section 1637 in September 1892 - Pellew owned a drapery store on Devon Street. On Skinner's 1880 Map of New Plymouth, a structure is located on this section, however this structure is not thought to be the current dwelling and was probably removed sometime prior to construction of the present villa. 

In August 1894, New Plymouth architect Frank Messenger placed an advertisement in the Taranaki Herald calling for tenders for the construction of "a cottage in Pendarves Street for Mr W Pellew" - this almost certainly refers to the current home at 58 Pendarves Street and is one of Frank Messenger's earliest surviving buildings in New Plymouth.

A newspaper article published in November 1894 described Pellew's new residence. The timber and joinery were supplied by the Sash and Door Company; the builder Mr T S. Dixon; with the painting completed by Mr Cleland, and the plumbing work by Mr Moatt.

The villa is clad in rusticated weatherboard.
