This two-storey home in Gover Street was built in 1922 for Mr Stanley Shaw, a local land agent and auctioneer.

A building permit was issued to Mr Shaw on 21 January 1922 for a "Residence & Garage" on section 3 and 4, Gover Street (see DP4140). The estimated cost was £2,400 and the architects were the well known firm of Messenger, Griffiths & Taylor.

In the early 1930s the house was sold to the magistrate William Woodward and his wife Alice. The address for them on the 1935 New Plymouth electoral roll is listed as "Whare Ra", Gover Street.

According to an article about the house in the Property supplement in the Taranaki Daily News (1 December 2012) the home once had a tennis court on the section. In the 1950s that part of the property was sold and a house built.

The house is located on what were the original town section numbers 1686,1687 and 1713.
