A building permit was issued to J. West on 21 May 1927 for the construction of a "Bake House" on Part Town Section 892 (now 35 Devon Street East). The builder was George Beamish and the estimated cost was £600.
It seems likely that this was Joseph West who operated a bakery at this location from about the 1890s. It's quite possible, however, that West did not actually run his business from the new building. In 1930 the occupier in the Wises Directory is listed as a bootmaker, George Wigley.
Town section 892 was granted to James Lawson in 1859, but only two years later it was subdivided and in 1898 Joseph West purchased the eastern part, although he was perhaps leasing the property from earlier than this.
