This single storey wooden shop is the oldest commercial premises in Westown, and pre-dates the other original wooden shop in Westown, the butchery store (1922).
The building was constructed following the creation of the Maratahu extension subdivision on former golf course land. Plans for a "shop" for N. Allan on Section 16, Block 20, Tukapo Street, were deposited with the Borough Council in July 1920 - the contractor/architect was T. A. Coleman?, and the estimated construction cost was £300.
The shop has been extended at the back and side - the two original wooden front veranda posts (now very uncommon), mark the original width of the shop.
An accident in June 2016, where a car crashed into the side of the shop, revealed that the walls were originally clad in weatherboard.
